Red Wigglers I have Red Worms (Eisenia Foetida) for vermicomposting. These worms are voracious eaters. They eat any organic matter you put in their bin. I am selling beginner Kitchen Composting Kits. These kits are for anyone who wants to start composting their kitchen scraps to produce worm castings to put around plants and to improve their soil. Also, these kits are good for raising your own worms to feed reptiles, to fish with, or to take any extra worms to put into an outdoor composting bin. I also sell larger quantities of red wigglers to add to larger bins. Worm Castings This is what the worms produce when they eat organic matter. Worms grind and mix nutrients and trace elements in simple forms. When worm castings are used around plants in your yard and garden, it improves the soil structure, aides in water retention, speeds up seed germination and increases root development. Worm castings mixed with a little sand, makes a great seed starter. The castings have nutrients that will feed the seedlings for several months. They retain water to help seeds germinate. Vermicompost This is the end product of the breakdown of organic matter by worms. Vermicompost is an excellent, nutrient rich fertilizer and soil conditioner. Using Red Wigglers to compost kitchen scraps, keeps organic waste from going to the landfill. Using a small scale composting system, you can compost kitchen scraps, fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags, moldy bread, and paper shreds to make your own worm castings. These worms reproduce well in captivity, so if you have too many in your kitchen compost bin, you can make a larger bin, or show your friends how they can compost too. Also take the worm castings out occasionally, and give the worms some new bedding. |

I started this business to help people become more aware of the benefits of nightcrawlers. There are thousands of species of worms all over the world. Plants benefit from worms in the soil in yards and gardens. If you have poor soil, soil with little organic matter for worms to eat, and if you start composting kitchen and yard waste, you can improve the soil by adding the worm castings to it. If you improve your soil, worms will come. My brother and sister-in-law (triskelesfarm.com) have mostly clay soil, they added wood chips around their fruit trees, and now they have worms in the soil. It won’t happen over-night, but any improvement will ultimately help any plants and trees in your yard. I just started this business in March 2009, but am eager to get as many worms as I can out to people who want to start composting, go fishing, or using worm castings for fertilizer. The worms I am raising can do all of these things. I use coir (coconut fiber) as a bedding material, add a little worm food, water, and let the worms do the rest. I will use no chemicals of any kind on the bedding material. Some facts about worm castings (manure): They won’t burn your plants no matter how much you use. They have no odor and are completely safe to humans, animals, and the environment. They help soil retain moisture, make nutrients available to plants, improve root growth, loosen soil for other worms. Some facts about nightcrawlers: Most of the worms used for fishing bait come from Canada. These worms are dug out of the ground because they can’t be grown in captivity. This is depleting the supply of worms in the soil, making them harder to find and the ones being caught are smaller. These worms also have to be refrigerated. Our worms are home grown in warm soil, fed good food, rain water is used to moisten the soil. Some facts about vermicomposting: The worms used for vermicomposting are called Red Wigglers. Tons of food and yard waste go to landfills every day. I have designed a small starter kit to help people learn how to compost kitchen waste. By starting small, we hope some of our customers will ultimately start larger compost bins so they can compost yard waste and kitchen scraps. This helps keep these items from going to the landfill. I also have the Worm Factory for sale. |
